ABOUT THE MOBILE LEARNING PROGRAM
The Mobile Learning Program is Changing the Way New Trier Teachers Teach and Students Learn
New Trier's one-to-one Mobile Learning Program (MLP) provides an iPad for every student. These devices offer a set of unique features which create opportunities for personalized learning, increased engagement, and creative expression—offering the potential to transform teaching and learning.
BENEFITS OF THE IPAD
The District evaluated the efficacy of the iPad as New Trier’s one-to-one device to ensure that we are supporting all learners. Our evaluation efforts indicated that the tablet-style mobile device features were critical to the program's success, some of which include:
- Instantly record, edit, and integrate audio and video
- Immediate access to resources in classrooms
- A variety of easy-to-use core productivity and course-specific apps
- Increased digital communication with teachers
- Efficient feedback between teacher and student
- Improved classroom routines and practices
- Improved student organization and management of work
NEW TRIER IPAD PURCHASE REQUIREMENT
With the Board's support of a one-to-one program, the District subsidizes the iPad purchase, and families pay a reduced price and retain ownership of the iPad. This shared cost between the District and families acknowledges that the device can be used for both educational and personal purposes. Students may only purchase one subsidized device during their time at New Trier. Included with the iPad purchase is a 4-year AppleCare+ Protection Plan, a Logitech keyboard case, and access to both core and curricular apps. Any replacement devices will need to be purchased from the district at the full retail cost.
Students are required to use the iPad provided at the time of their scheduled iPad orientation. These iPads are managed by New Trier, ensuring a safe and secure computing experience.
ONLY NEW TRIER STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE
Only students who are enrolled during the school year may purchase an iPad through New Trier’s Mobile Learning Program (MLP). If a student acquires an iPad from the district and subsequently does not attend New Trier (either opting for another local school or relocating out of the district), the iPad must be returned before the first day of school, and the purchase will be promptly refunded.
-
MAKING YOUR IPAD SELECTION
To participate in the Mobile Learning Program, all students are required to purchase an iPad from the District at a subsidized cost, as well as attend an iPad orientation and training session.
Purchasing an iPad
iPads purchased through New Trier include a subsidy provided by the District to mitigate the cost of ownership. This shared cost between the District and families acknowledges that the device can be used at home and at school. Students may only purchase one subsidized device during their time at New Trier and must return their iPad if they move out of the District before the start of the school year. Included with the subsidized purchase is an iPad, keyboard case, 4-year extended AppleCare coverage, and access to both core and class-specific apps.
2024-2025 MLP iPad Options:
- iPad 256GB (10th Gen) + 4-year AppleCare coverage
- iPad Loan Program (Approval Required)
Our iPad online ordering portal opens on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2024. To purchase an iPad after the purchase portal is closed, reach out to iPadHelp at ipadhelp@nths.net.
IMPORTANT: Only students who are enrolled during the school year may receive an iPad. If a student is scheduled to receive an iPad but decides not to attend New Trier and has not attended iPad Orientation yet, they may reach out to the business office for a full refund. If a student has already received their iPad but decides before the start of the school year to no longer attend New Trier, the iPad must be returned, and a full refund will be issued. Once the student has started school at New Trier, no refund can be issued.
Can I Bring My Own Device?
Technology resources and restrictions require a New Trier-issued device. For that reason, New Trier does NOT offer a BYOD option for students.
Because technology is ever-evolving and we do not want students to be in the position where their device is no longer supported by Apple, incoming students cannot repurpose devices from graduated students. Each student must buy their own NT-issued iPad.
AppleCare+ Coverage
The cost of repairing an iPad can be very expensive without AppleCare+ extended coverage—almost comparable to the cost of a new device. The price of AppleCare+ is included in your device purchase and will cover up to two incidents of accidental damage per year. You can bring your device to the trevIT help desk for service. While we know that students do their best to keep their devices safe, the frequency of use throughout the school day can increase the likelihood of damage. For a better understanding of AppleCare+ terms and conditions, click HERE.
Financial Assistance Program
The District provides financial assistance for families through New Trier's Financial Assistance Program. If a family qualifies, a loaner iPad will be provided at no cost.
Applications for financial assistance for the 2024-25 school year may be found in the “Forms” section of the parent PowerSchool portal. Students who qualify for financial assistance will be loaned an iPad at the time of their scheduled iPad orientation. IMPORTANT: Families must apply and be approved prior to scheduling an orientation session for their student. Please contact the Associate Superintendent’s office at 847-784-3409 or feebills@nths.net with any questions regarding financial assistance.

ITEMS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING WITH YOU TO YOUR IPAD ORIENTATION AND PICKUP:
Receipt of purchase: Students must bring a copy of their payment receipt in order to receive the iPad. This was emailed to the family after purchasing the iPad via the New Trier Webstore (RevTrak). The email will come from "New Trier District 203/NTX Web Store".
If approved for financial assistance through the district, no receipt will be needed.
Student ID Cards: Students should bring some form of identification to their scheduled iPad pickup (i.e. library card, former school ID, or something with a name and photo, such as a passport).
STAYING DURING AN IPAD ORIENTATION
Due to limited space, we ask parents to drop off their students and pick them up at the designated time. If a student would benefit from having a parent/guardian accompany them, please let us know in advance by emailing the iPad Help Line at ipadhelp@nths.net. NOTE: Most orientations run between 60 to 90 minutes.
MAKING SCHEDULE CHANGES
If families need to change the date of the student's iPad orientation and pickup, log back into the MLP Web Portal and select the "Click here to change" link to choose another day and time.

IPAD RESTRICTIONS
iPad Restrictions for New Trier’s Incoming Freshman
In an effort to provide students with every opportunity to be successful in the classroom and to ease the transition to high school, restrictions are automatically applied to minimize distractions (i.e. social media notifications, texting, gaming) and encourage the use of school-approved apps and resources.
However, families can choose to opt-out of iPad restrictions at the time of purchasing the iPad. IMPORTANT: If you opt out of applying device restrictions and then decide later you want to apply those restrictions, please know this does take time for our technology staff and may take up to 2-4 weeks to reinstate.
The iPad restrictions include:
- Removing access to the Apple App Store, limiting what students can install on their iPad, including games, social media apps and VPN profiles -- any apps required for class will be distributed via Self Service free of charge.
- Disable the iMessage feature on the iPad.
Changing Status of iPad Restrictions
If you have any questions about this policy or want to change the restriction status of your student’s iPad, please contact the Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Michael Marassa, at marassam@nths.net.

PROGRAM GUIDELINES & BEST PRACTICES
It is important that students and families are familiar with the rules associated with using technology at New Trier. Students are governed under the rules and regulations covered in New Trier's Acceptable Use Regulations (AUR) found in the Student Guidebook . In addition to the AUR, families should familiarize themselves with policies outlined in the New Trier Mobile Learning Program (MLP) Acknowledgement .
The Following Guidelines also apply:
- You may purchase additional apps at your own expense. You will maintain ownership of the apps and media purchased with your personal Apple ID.
- Internet filtering is provided at school, but not at home. Parents may choose to monitor internet usage or limit access to iPads off-campus.
- Mobile device management (MDM) software and profiles may not be removed from the device.
- It is expected that students will have a fully-charged iPad available each day for class.
- Students may configure additional personal email accounts or messaging services on their iPad, but email and messaging content on the device is subject to the terms of the Acceptable Use Regulations while on campus.
- "Jailbreaking" the device results in the loss of the Apple warranty and is a violation of the terms of use. Using a jailbroken device on the New Trier network is not allowed.
BEST PRACTICES
- Transporting your iPad - Depending on your model, your keyboard cases may be able to separate into two parts - the iPad and the keyboard. Students should always re-attach these two components to ensure that the keyboard and the iPad are protected. This will greatly reduce the likelihood of iPad and/or keyboard damage.
- Charging your iPad - Charge your iPad every night to prepare for the next day at school. Some students may find themselves using the iPad in every period and a full charge would be necessary. New Trier does not provide extra chargers or loaner iPads for students who forget their iPad or run out of battery.
- Personal Content on the iPad - The student must be aware that there is no expectation of privacy on the iPad while on campus at New Trier. Content including documents, music, messages, emails, and photographs stored on the iPad could be accessed by authorized New Trier staff at any time.
- Backing Up - The student is responsible for backing up all data on the iPad. Apple provides 5GB of iCloud storage space to backup the iPad. If more space is necessary, students can purchase more iCloud space from Apple or sync their iPad with iTunes on their personal computer. New Trier High School is not responsible for data loss in the event of a device failure or malfunction.
CARING FOR THE IPAD
We recommend that all students care for their iPad as follows:
- Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the device's screen; don't use cleansers of any type.
- Insert and remove charging cables carefully to prevent damage to connectors.
- Handle the device carefully. Screens can crack when dropped, twisted or subjected to pressure from stepping or leaning on them. Do not stack other objects (books, binders, etc.) on top of the iPad. Be careful with carrying iPads in backpacks. The weight of other objects in a backpack is often enough to crack an iPad screen or warp the frame. AppleCare+ does not cover warped frames.
- Do not leave the iPad in places of extreme temperature, humidity, or limited ventilation (e.g. in a car) for an extended period of time.
- Students are expected to keep food and beverages away from the device.
- Make sure the iPad and accessories are secure when they are in or out of sight. iPads should not be left in an unlocked locker, a desk, a backpack, or other location where someone might take it. Do not leave iPads unsecured while charging in public places.
- Students are required to secure their iPads with a Passcode. This protects their data from theft and loss.
APPLE IDS
An Apple ID is an account used to access all of Apple's services. At New Trier, we use these accounts to download apps, backup data from the iPads, and track missing iPads. Your Apple ID is connected to an email address and may be used for personal purchases in addition to school purposes.
To create an Apple ID, go to http://appleid.apple.com and verify your new Apple ID through your email. Students who have a pre-existing Apple ID may continue to use this Apple ID as long as the email address is still valid.
We recommend students who had an Apple ID created by a middle school update it to a personal email address. To update your email address, go to http://appleid.apple.com to learn more.
TECH SUPPORT
Students can receive tech assistance from 7:30-3:30 pm each school day at trevIT support locations - at Northfield inside the library and at Winnetka in room W240 (located directly outside the library). Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and students can also email the iPad Help Line at iPadHelp@nths.net.

IPAD REPAIR, LOSS & APPLECARE+
New Trier is committed to providing students high quality support so they can focus less on the technical aspects of the iPad and more on academic goals. To make the repair, loss, and damage process as easy as possible, New Trier has several services in place. Technical support is available at each campus during school hours (7:30am-4:00pm). If you need assistance with your iPad, please visit the trevIT desk at either campus just outside the library at Winnetka or inside the library at Northfield.

COVERAGE FOR LOST OR STOLEN IPADS
While New Trier does not insure against lost or stolen iPads, there are options available for purchasing this type of coverage. If you are interested in Lost/Stolen iPad coverage, contact your cell phone service, homeowners insurance, or the Worth Ave Group or GoCare.
WHAT TO KNOW IF YOUR IPAD IS LOST OR STOLEN
- Students should go to the trevIT desk immediately. Any iPad registered with our mobile device management system (Self-Service) can be tracked when powered up and connected to New Trier’s wireless network. Students should also immediately use Apple's Find My App or log into iCloud (icloud.com) to locate their lost device.
- A lost or stolen iPad is NOT covered by the extended AppleCare+ warranty.
- You may be issued a loaned iPad at the discretion of technology staff, depending on availability. You may keep this loaned device for up to two weeks or until you arrange to have your iPad replaced or repaired (whichever comes first).
- Any replacement devices will need to be purchased from the district at the full retail cost.
IPAD NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY?
FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
- Go to trevIT for a device assessment (outside the library at the Winnetka campus, or inside the library at the Northfield campus).
- If the issue is covered under AppleCare+, technology staff will assist you in repairing or replacing your device. Please contact trevIT for information on any deductible costs.
- If your AppleCare+ plan has expired, technology staff will advise you on your options for repairing or replacing your device. You may receive a replacement device after paying the deductible.
EXPIRED COVERAGE
After your 4-year coverage expires, you will be responsible for any repair or replacement costs for your iPad and charger. As a courtesy, students with expired coverage may stop by trevIT first for a free assessment before scheduling an appointment at the Apple Store.
BROKEN KEYBOARD CASE
New Trier's Mobile Learning program allows one iPad case for each student. Although cases are given as a courtesy provide students with the necessary tools to complete their schoolwork as well as to help protect student iPads, the District is not responsible for providing additional protection.
Logitech Rugged Combo cases are rugged, durable, and built to withstand a lot of punishment. However, in the event the case becomes defective or damaged in any way, students and their families are responsible for case/protection solutions for their student’s iPad. IMPORTANT: The Logitech keyboard cases come with a warranty, and in the event an iPad case malfunctions, families are encouraged to complete a warranty claim using this link. The keyboard case must be registered with Logitech to be eligible to file a warranty claim. We recommend registering your product immediately. Please Note: New Trier does not facilitate the warranty claim process. The claim process is between the family and the Logitech company.
For more information about the Logitech Limited Hardware Warranty, click here.
NEW TRIER'S IPAD REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT
Students who come to trevIT (outside the library at Winnetka and inside the library at Northfield) will be able to receive a free, basic diagnostic by technology specialists. While help is always available to students, it is best practice that students make sure student iPad content is being backed up automatically. Visit trevIT so we can walk you through the process; we are always here to help!
STEP 1
RECOMMENDED METHOD: BACKING UP TO ICLOUD
During your iPad orientation, students were required to set up their iPads to automatically back up to Apple’s iCloud. If you find that you are out of iCloud space, you should consider purchasing additional storage as it is fairly inexpensive.
BACKING UP TO YOUR COMPUTER USING iTUNES
If you do choose to backup your iPad content using iTunes on your personal computer, follow these steps carefully. * NOTE: Apple requires that users choose either iCloud or iTunes as a means of backing up content, and once you select the iTunes option, iCloud will no longer backup content automatically.
STEP 2
Students should bring their iPads to the Apple store and pay the deductible there. Pending approval, there are instances when a student may be given a loaned iPad; however, keep in mind that loaned iPads are subject to the terms of the MLP Acknowledgement (MLPA).
Students who receive a new device must remain in contact with technology specialists throughout the process. trevIT will transfer all data from the student's old device to the new device. Anything backed up on the iCloud will transfer to the new iPad.
IMPORTANT: All communication is issued to student's New Trier email accounts (@student.nths.net). Failure to stay in communication with technology specialists will impede our ability to provide high quality service. If a loaner device is issued, it must be returned before the student graduates or transfers out of New Trier.
WHAT IF MY LOANED IPAD OR ACCESSORY BREAKS OR IS LOST/STOLEN?
Loaned iPads are property of the district and are only loaned to students who qualify or have been specially approved for a loan during the repair process. Loaned iPads must be returned in operable condition, with all accessories and parts in reasonable condition; however, we understand that things happen. If a loaned iPad or accessory breaks or is lost/stolen during the rental period, the district may seek reimbursement on a case-by-case basis.

EBOOKS
eBooks @ New Trier
New Trier works hand-in-hand with teachers and department leadership to evaluate eBook/digital textbook options for all courses. Not every classroom will use digital texts (i.e., eBooks, Apple Books, supersites, or open educational resources (OER), such as OpenStax, as some textbooks or specific editions are simply not available in a digital format, the textbook may only be available digitally, or the iPad eReader does not deliver a satisfactory user experience. To learn more about the features and functions of eReader apps.
New Trier has partnered with Beck’s Bookstore to provide all textbook and academic materials to students. When purchasing eBooks specifically, Beck’s will provide login information and instructions on how to access their eBooks a couple of days prior to the first day of school. NOTE: It is always good practice for families to retain proof of purchase for all academic materials for future reference.
EBOOK BENEFITS
Students should reach out directly to Beck’s online support by emailing newtrier@becksbooks.com. This is the best way to receive timely assistance and avoid standing in line at the onsite bookstore. NOTE: After a student emails Beck’s for support, it may take anywhere from a few hours up to 24 hours for a response.
NOTE TO STUDENT USERS
eBooks may offer a number of benefits beyond print textbooks. Specialized features can include bookmarking, in-text highlighting, note taking and sharing, access to online glossaries and other supplemental content (i.e. videos, external links). eReader apps for iPads may be needed for accessing eBooks and can be found in Self-Service, New Trier’s internal app delivery platform.
