CURRICULAR FOCUS AREAS:
Independent Living Skills
- To assist our young adults in making the transition to adulthood, care has been taken to create an individualized schedule that feels less like high school and more like an adult environment. Instruction focuses on life skills such as meal planning and preparation, health and safety, public transportation skills, money management, recreation skills, and communication skills.
Vocational Training
- Vocational training and job experience are an important way to increase each student’s independence. Our young adults participate in community-based job experiences daily. Our job coaches support student growth in work completion, work behavior, communication skills, following directions, problem solving, and much more.
Accessing the Community
- Young adults participate in community-based instruction to work on accessing the local community and to practice independent living skills. Our community-based Transition Center allows our young adults to access their community on a daily basis.
Examples include:
- PACE/Metra
- Grocery Shopping
- Field Trips
- Community-based Fitness Activities
- Many more (e.g. library, bank, restaurants, retail stores)
Individualized Transition Planning
-
Care is taken to assist families in making linkages to adult services to ensure the transition to adulthood can be as smooth as possible for our young adults.
Our Transition Team lead individual transition planning meetings with our young adults and their families to discuss future plans and make essential linkages to adult services.
