Description: A place where students can explore job opportunities that vary from easy to difficult level of completion. These tasks also have a range of varieties to find interest in other job-type fields. Students also do tasks alongside peer helpers who volunteer their time to help act as a “coworker” in a job setting. They monitor the work while engaging in a social atmosphere. Overall, the goal is to provide students with skills to be able to continue into their adult life. The idea is that the PAES lab has a job for everyone as well different areas of interest such as sorting, cleaning, typing, etc.

Mimics Real-World Settings in a Work Place
- The PAES Lab is designed to be as much like a real workplace as possible.
- Teachers become Supervisors and Students become Employees
- Employees Clock In/Clock Out, just like a real job
- Employees follow an independent work procedure, which guides them through the process of getting their own job materials and calling for supervisors only when necessary
Job tasks:
- Kids do various tasks such as alphabetizing/sorting/ labeling/ cleaning/typing. The task has a certain order to be done from start to finish to “complete” the task. The whole process is timed to ensure progress gets measured as well as seeing how well students follow step-by-step instructions. During this task, and how well they can perform certain skills.
- The PAES lab also gives students practice for real-life work settings and managing changes in environment, listening to directions and following through with tasks.
- There are a wide range of accommodations available; one being; Students can use their device for communication or sign language and other modes of communication.
- Tasks are set at a base level 1 of “easy” working its way to level 6 being difficult in 5 job categories. (marketing, consumer, business, etc.)
